Galina Rogova is a minor Dark Other, a were-panther, whose death at the hands of the uninitiated Light Magician Maxim triggers the central investigation of the second story, "Among His Own Kind." Though she never appears alive in the narrative, her murder serves as the catalyst for a complex provocation by the Day Watch, forcing the Night Watch to confront the existence of a rogue Light killer and ultimately exposing the moral compromises at the heart of the Treaty.

Identity and Background

Galina Rogova was a twenty-four-year-old were-panther, initiated at the age of seven. Her family were not Others. Her mentor was Anna Chernogorova, a fourth-grade magician. The Night Watch dossier describes her as having "average powers." Despite being a Dark One, she never worked for the Day Watch. She never hunted human beings, not even once. She had been granted two licenses—one when she came of age and another after her wedding—but she never used them. With the help of magic, she reached a high position in the Warm Home construction corporation and married the deputy director. She had one child, a boy, in whom no Other powers were detected. She used her powers as an Other for self-protection a few times, and on one occasion killed an attacker, but even then she did not stoop to cannibalism. Semyon, a veteran Night Watch agent, remarked, "We could do with more shape-shifters like that."

Death and Investigation

Galina Rogova was killed early one morning near Stoleshnikov Lane. She was leaving her building when Maxim, a self-appointed judge of the Darkness, confronted her. He called her by name, "Galina!" and when she turned, he declared, "I am the judge." She looked him over quickly, and Maxim caught a glint of yellow fire in her eyes. She asked, "You think you'll be able to manage that?" Maxim raised a wooden dagger—a weapon he had carved as a child—and drove it into her chest, piercing her heart. She did not make a sound. The transformation into a black panther and back to human form happened rapidly, and no wound was left on the body, only a cut on her blouse and jacket. The cause of death was a total drain of vital energy. The Day Watch lodged a formal protest with the Night Watch, claiming that the murder was the work of a Light Magician not registered in Moscow who was unaware of the Treaty. This protest forced the Night Watch to hold a full meeting and launch a city-wide search for the killer, whom they dubbed the "Maverick."

Narrative Role and Significance

Galina Rogova's death is the first in a series of killings that form the central plot of the second story. She is a sacrificial pawn in the Day Watch's long-term strategy. The Day Watch had allowed the Maverick to operate for years, sacrificing its own less valuable members to build a case against a specific Night Watch agent. The boss, Boris Ignatievich, immediately suspected a provocation, noting that the Day Watch could have easily located the killer themselves but chose not to. The investigation into her murder leads to the body swap between Anton and Olga, the confrontation with the Maverick, and the revelation that the entire crisis was a Night Watch operation designed to train Svetlana. Galina Rogova, a Dark One who lived a quiet, law-abiding life, becomes a symbol of the innocent casualties in the endless war between Light and Darkness, a life sacrificed for a larger, hidden purpose.
